The Hunt for Jennifer Hudson's nephew continues…

Chicago Police and the FBI continue to press their search for seven-year-old Julian King, the nephew of Oscar-winning actress Jennifer Hudson and the son of Hudson's sister, Julia Hudson. King was believed to be with Hudson's mother and brother, Darnell Hudson Donerson (57) and Jason S. Hudson (29) in their south side Chicago (Englewood) home this past Friday morning when someone shot Donerson and Jason Hudson to death. Donerson was shot in the head and Hudson in the chest, both multiple times, and one of the victims had defensive wounds in evidence. Neighbors reported hearing gunshots on Friday morning and the bodies of the two victims were discovered by a relative later that afternoon. King has not been seen since and is the object of a multi-state search, this while his mother Julia and his father, Greg King, pleaded from a church pulpit for the safe return of their son.

Chicago Police have a number of suspects in custody concerning the double homicide, to include Julia Hudson's former/estranged husband, 27-year-old ex-con William Balfour. Balfour, who served seven years in prison for attempted murder and car hijacking, was paroled in May 2006, and listed the address of the murder scene as one of his residences. At least one neighbor has told police that Balfour had threatened Hudson's family over a dispute concerning a car. Meanwhile Balfour's mother insists her son had nothing to do with the double murder and suspected abduction and has asked police to let her daughter talk to the suspect, a request authorities have so far refused, probably because they don't want him getting outside information or assistance.

Chicago has regained its title of the murder capital of the U.S., with 426 murders to date compared to 417 for New York City and 302 for Los Angeles. In 2007 Chicago counted 443 murder victims ranking it then second behind New York City's 494 murder victims. Chicago's 2007 and 2008 numbers are still well below the record 851 murder victims in "the windy city" in 1990. Many other large cities across America have also reported a rise in killings due to guns (especially semi and fully automatic firearms) and gang violence. As a nation, America reported 16,929 murders for 2007, almost 100 fewer than 2006, and well below the 1991 national high water mark for homicides of 24,703.

Young Julian King, the subject of an Amber Alert, may have been taken from the home by the killer of his grandmother and uncle. The Amber Alert includes information concerning a 1994 white Chevy Suburban that was believed to have been taken from the murder scene, perhaps as a means to transport the kidnap victim. Another alert suggests that King could be in a green Chrysler Concorde with a temporary license plate. While Balfour is a suspect in the double murder, he has so far refused to talk to police about the two homicides or the possible whereabouts of King.

Because of the number of homicides in Chicago, their police department is very good at solving such cases, noting that the majority of murder victims are killed by someone they know. Physical evidence will be needed to link any murder suspect to the crime scene and, in the case of Balfour; his logical defense is that he resided there, that is, until Mrs. Donerson allegedly demanded that he move out. Meanwhile the hunt for King continues. The FBI is involved in most missing child cases where criminal activity is suspected. Unlike the movies, there is no 24 or 48 hour waiting period before the FBI enters such a case as all investigators know the clock is already against them in such cases.

If Balfour was the killer, (noting he was seen with a gun similar to that used to kill the victims, and he had both the motive and opportunity to kill) what did he do with King? If he or others murdered the little boy, why not leave him in the residence with the other two victims? Would he have taken the boy to stay with a friend or just as a way to further punish his ex-wife? As police have other suspects in custody, one of them, if involved in the murders and/or the possible abduction, may prove more willing to talk than Balfour. In the meantime every friend and associate of Balfour, and any other suspect, will be identified and interviewed as the race against time continues in the search for a missing seven-year-old who did nothing but, perhaps, be in the wrong place at the wrong time. I fear it is a race they will lose and that Balfour will be responsible for yet another death.

Cliff, you seemed gleeful and almost giddy as you discussed the little boy on MSNBC this morning.  I've seen you on other shows discussing other missing children and your demeanor seemed odd to me concerning this case.  You couldn't wait to tell the gory story of another case you were involved in where you vividly described how the child was eventually found "stuffed under the stairs."  It's possible that I am being overly sensitive but I think not.

    Concerned,

Fortune and money can = death.  It seems that a low profile in life is better, but Hudson's mother stayed in the old neighborhood and tried to do exactly that.  It's people who see murder as a method of conflict resolution that will continue to plague our society and add to the rolls of the dead.
