Madeleine McCann was about to turn four when she disappeared from the Portuguese sea front resort hotel room where she lay sleeping with her then two-year-old twin brother and sister. As probably the best known missing person in the world, her face having been seen by millions worldwide, most know that her parents, British Drs. Gerry and Kate McCann, left their children alone in the hotel room as they dined with seven friends in an open air restaurant some 100 yards away. It was about 9:45 PM when Kate discovered Madeleine missing from the room, resulting in a massive international investigation to find the missing child. Portuguese police, for their part, appear to have made many mistakes in the investigation, and their theories to explain the young child’s disappearance ranged from being accidentally killed and disposed of by her parents, to being kidnapped by a nearby suspected pedophile. Other theories have the targeted for kidnap and sale to either an international gang of child abusers or, in the best case, to a childless couple who had “special ordered” a blond haired little girl through an unknown kidnapper, this so as to raise the child as their own. What we do know is that after a one-year investigation that crossed dozens of international borders, the local police declared the cold case officially closed as of July 2008.

The McCanns, and their supporters, have nonetheless pressed their case throughout the UK, Europe, the U.S., and many other countries, hiring teams of investigators to continue the search where the police left off. In their latest release of information, family investigators, including former British police officers, have announced what they consider new and potentially significant information relating to now six-year-old Maddy McCann’s disappearance. Two British men have allegedly come forward to state that while bar hopping in Barcelona, Spain three days after Madeleine’s disappearance, they met a woman who had some type of information concerning the missing child. As their story goes, at about 2 AM they were in a bar at the Port Olimpic Marina when an unidentified woman mistook one of them for someone she was there to meet. The mystery woman, described as a Victoria (Posh Spice) Beckham look alike, further described as being in her mid 30’s (like Posh), 5’2”, and speaking English with an Australian accent, said something to the men that made them believe she knew something about Madeleine’s disappearance.

Well, here we are; over two years later and the new “witness” has finally decided to come forward. Why did he delay these past 27 months in sharing his story? “Personal reasons” we are told… The principle witness, described as a 41-year-old man, indicated he had two different conversations with the woman that night/morning, but denies he was drunk at the time (multiple bars, 2 AM, h-m-m-m.) Many, include Madeleine’s parents, still cling to the hope that she was kidnapped by or for some “loving family” who continue to care for her to this day, treating her as if she were their own special child. In that regard such a kidnapping could have included her transportation by sea from Portugal to Spain, thus accounting for the information allegedly in the possession of this still to be identified woman. Others hold a darker, and, unfortunately more likely view that Madeleine was kidnapped by an unknown child predator, assaulted, murdered, and her body disposed of in a way that frustrated all attempts to find her by local Portuguese investigators.

Could this lead be the one that solves this mystery and leads to the recovery of Madeleine McCann or could it be another dead end lead, to include the dozens of Maddy look alikes that have been seen and later identified as having nothing to do with Madeleine’s disappearance? Some have even suggested that the new witness may have made this story up for his own twisted reasons, or that the private investigators somehow concocted the incident to justify their time and salaries. The reality is no matter how slim the chance that this has something concrete to do with the disappearance of young girl with “the special eye," it needs to be resolved and the “Posh Spice” look alike, if she actually exists, needs to be located and interviewed, no matter whether she is in Spain or Australia. Meantime Madeleine’s brother and sister continue to await the return of their big sister, someone who, unfortunately, is probably just a picture on the wall to them at this time.
